Arteta: Fracture to keep Merino sidelined for weeks

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta provides an update on the injury sustained by midfielder Mohamed Elneny

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Mohamed Elneny has suffered a significant ankle injury that will keep him out of action for an extended period.

Elneny sustained the injury during Arsenal's pre-season friendly against Orlando City

The Egyptian international was stretchered off the field after a challenge with Facundo Torres in the first half of the match.

Arteta has now revealed that Elneny has fractured his ankle and will be out for "weeks."

"Mo has a significant injury," Arteta said. "He has a fracture in his ankle. We don't know how long he will be out for, but it will be weeks."

The injury is a major blow to Arsenal, who are already without Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka due to injury.

Elneny has been a key player for Arsenal in recent seasons, and his absence will be a major loss.

The Gunners are now likely to be in the market for a new midfielder before the start of the season

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, but no deal has yet been agreed.
