The new ferry will be built at Cammell Laird's shipyard in Birkenhead, creating and safeguarding jobs in the Liverpool City Region. The construction of the ferry is expected to take approximately two years, with the ferry entering service in 2025. The new ferry will be named after a famous Liverpudlian or a reflection of the rich maritime heritage of the city region.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: "This is a significant investment in our Mersey Ferries fleet, and it will provide a much-needed boost to our transport network. The new ferry will be a flagship for our fleet, and it will help us to attract more people to use the river as a means of travel."

John Syvret, Managing Director of Cammell Laird, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to build the new Mersey Ferries flagship ferry. This is a prestigious project, and it will showcase Cammell Laird's world-renowned shipbuilding capabilities.
